Moorea is a beautiful heart shaped island. It is part of the French Polynesian Islands. This island is only twenty-five kilometers away from its big sister, Tahiti. Most of the time, Moorea is considered the unknown island. You may have never heard of it. And yet, you know all about Tahiti and Bora Bora. So, let me share a few of the amazing things that will make you fall in love with this island. Add in a few other activities and a non-touristy feel and you will never regret taking a vacation in Moorea.
Driving around a strange place can be intimidating for some people. Moorea is an island though. So, I recommend getting out there and hitting the open road. It’s not like you can get lost or anything!
Especially since there is basically one road that circles the entire thirty-seven miles of the island.
Start with a trip to the Belvédère Lookout. You’ll be rewarded with sweeping views of Opunohu Bay and Cook’s Bay.
If the beach is calling, head west to Painapo Beach. Or go east to sink your toes in the sand at Tamae Beach.
You may even be interested in watching the sunset as you dine at the Hotel Hibiscus. Stay until the last rays dip below the horizon.
Most of these activities would not be as simple to do if you didn’t rent a car for your vacation in Moorea.
Do you love getting off the beaten path while on vacation?
A vacation in Moorea can be paired with an ATV tour or two. Each tour will put a smile on your face, as you explore the interior of the island. You’ll capture all the sights and sounds you will miss while driving around the island in a car.
There are single seater and double seater ATVs available for rent. You can choose the option you are most comfortable with.
Then enjoy the ride, as you fly through pineapple fields. And as you discover the best views on the island.
Hiking is another perfect option for getting away from the crowds. Not that there are really any crowds on this island.
You will find that the best hiking within the Tahitian Islands is right on Moorea. The trails are well-marked with signage. You can even use one of the trail maps to keep on course. This is sometimes your best option if you are searching for a specific stunning viewpoint.
During your time on the trails, you will explore ancient forests. Take the time to visit the pre-European traditional temple ruins, or marae. The historical sites amongst the lush valleys and massive peaks are also worthy of your time.
There is something so surreal about snorkeling with marine life. Especially when you are on vacation in Moorea.
One of the lagoon tours will take you out to Opunohu Bay and Cook’s Bay for a little sightseeing. Afterwards, you’ll head to the shallow waters of the lagoon to snorkel with the manta rays, black tip sharks, and a turtle if you are lucky!
I highly recommend taking a waterproof camera with you. Bonus points if it takes videos too!
You will use your camera often while you are underwater. A few picture-perfect views might even need to be captured while you eat a delicious Tahitian lunch out on the water.
Before you head back to shore, muster up the courage to pet the manta rays. These creatures love the attention.
You may be the type of person who likes to stay busy while away from home. However, during a vacation in Moorea, one of the top things on your list should be relaxing.
This is the best island for relaxing. In fact, there are plenty of options when it comes to relaxing.
Try soaking up the sun at your resort. If that is too much stillness for you, head out in a kayak for a leisurely paddle. Or take a long walk along the shoreline.
You can even relax while dining at one of the local family run restaurants. I know I would be all calm and relaxed if someone else was doing the cooking and bringing the food to me!
